Sweden’s largest secondhand e-commerce company, Sellpy, is rapidly expanding their business that has a sharp focus on sustainability. They now will double their premises with an additional 10,000 square meter in Prologis’ newly built facility in Rosersberg, outside Stockholm. The buildings many sustainable features were a good match to Sellpys’ requirements.
In total, Prologis Park Rosersberg DC3 comprises over 10,000 square meters, including offices and mezzanine warehousing. The property is equipped with solar panels that can generate up to 150,000 kilowatts per year, equal to the annual use of more than six standard-size houses.
“There’s a lot of pressure on a space like this that’s so close to the city. So we’re happy to be able to help a sustainable company like Sellpy expand,” says Gunnar Gillholm, VP and country manager at Prologis Nordics.
“Demand has grown quickly for our services, and we have needed more space for some time now,” says Oskar Nielsen, COO and one of the founders of Sellpy. “In Rosersberg, all goods sold will be packaged, stored and distributed. Nearly 8 million goods will be handled annually, which places high demands on logistics and structure. This property is the right size; it has an excellent location; and Prologis also gave us plenty of freedom to influence the design.”
The idea was to develop something more than just a regular warehouse. “We wanted to create a good, pleasant workplace from all perspectives, where the work environment in its entirety achieves a high standard. That means everything from good ventilation and lighting to social spaces for the staff,” explains Nielsen.
Sustainable retail calls for a sustainable facility
Sellpy’s strong environmental profile means the demand for sustainability transcends multiple levels. Through Sellpy, products are given new life, which has saved around 9 billion liters of water and 20,000 tons of carbon dioxide since its establishment in 2014, so it was also critical for the new space to meet the highest sustainability requirements.
“It is important to us to work with companies with a clear emphasis on sustainability, and we really think Prologis meets that requirement,” explains Nielsen.
“It’s consistent with our own profile,” says Gillholm. “We’re on the list of the 100 most sustainable companies in the world and can therefore call ourselves the world’s most sustainable property company.”
The facility is built according to the BREEAM “Very Good” accreditation, which evaluates sustainability from environmental, social and economic perspectives. It is also energy efficient and has bright LED lighting to save energy and create a good work environment.
The property is located just a few minutes from Arlanda Airport and about 30 minutes from downtown Stockholm, which optimizes transport economy and allows staff to use public transportation to commute to and from the workplace.
“The location is really important because we also work to have sustainable transports. For example, we combine the collection of goods to be sold with deliveries of sold items,” says Nielsen.
Sellpy was established in 2014 and quickly became Sweden’s largest e-commerce and sales service for secondhand goods. Since then, the company has handled over 12 million items and currently has over 370 employees. Sellpy handles everything from collection, quality control and photography to sales and distribution. The goal is to create the same online purchasing experience for secondhand items as for new products.
